YOUTH WITH A MISSION - TORCH

Together Restoring Community Hope

ToRCH Base has at its heart a desire to work with the poor communities to help them develop Physically, Spiritually, Socially and Emotionally. We feel a particular call to work with women and children and those affected with HIV/AIDS. We likewise want to see the local church encouraged and equiped to work for community development. We run a variety of activities to help us achieve this. In addition, we feel strongly to make prayer for the community and for our activities central to everything we do, recognising GOD as the one who brings true development and transformation.

ToRCH is made up of four ministries like Kangulumira Integrated Health Programme(KIHP), Child Education Sponsorship (CES) Spring of Hope, and Health Promotion for development (HPD)

KANGULUMIRA INTEGRATED HEALTH PROGRAMME Since 1993, KIHP work is mainly in 37 village of Kangulumira, which is found in Kayunga district 15 minutes drive from Jinja Town. It is made up of programmes like: The Clinic, Pastoral Evangelism Team, Counselling, Income Generating Programme, Women and  Fellowships. KHIP was launched at the hight of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Uganda, as a response to fight against the epidemic and other infections.

CLINIC We offer basic curative care from anyone in the community. We particularly try to help people with HIV/AIDS. Every month we treat around 600 patients. The clinic aims to care for the whole person offering prayer and counselling to those that need it, alongside treatment of physical problems.

MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH Immunisation, Antenatal, and Family planning are all provided from the clinic and from outreaches to 6 neighbouring villages. We also work with Traditional Birth Attendants to improve their skills, as well as controlling malaria through subsidised sale of mosquito nets.

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS Many common diseases are preventable through Education, Improvement of Hygiene, and Sanitation. Volunteers in these villages have been trained as community health workers, and have passed on this knowledge to the communities. This is an on going process, and some of the community health workers, are assisting as vaccinators, and others have been recruited and re-trained to work in the clinic as Nursing assistants.

COMMUNITY COUNSELLING AIDES This one of the groups of volunteers that we recruited and trained in basic counselling skills, to support the people suffering from AIDS. Together with the counselling staff, they offer services in the communities, reaching out to patients in their homes, and some work at the clinic as full time counselling assistants. additionally, they are involved in running the DAY CARE, which brings patients from all over the sub-county, once a month, for support. This helps the patients share experiences and encourage one another. Their lives have been improved by this. Some of our Counselling Aides have given their lives to the LORD, and continue ministering to others to do the same.

MODEL FARM As the population increases, land available for each family to grow food is becoming smaller an d the soil less fertile as it is used year after year. Likewise, people with HIV/AIDS need to eat well and if possible have extra crops which they can sell to provide income for medical treatment and  other needs. Therefore we begun the farm with the aims of introducing organic farming techniques, and new variety of crops to the people of Kangulumira. Teaching occurs informally as farmers visit our farm, and through seminars.

CHILD EDUCATION SPONSORSHIP This is another department of ToRCH aimed at providing sponsorship to children whose families are unable to meet their fees for education. The ministry is sponsoring over 100 students, right from Elementary to University level
