Security Alert!

We are writing because of a security concern.

There has been an outbreak of people here in Uganda having their email accounts and their email identity stolen. This has happened to some YWAM staff and associates. The thief then starts impersonating the person who owns the email address, and he emails the people in the address book. Some of the people so emailed have fallen victim of this scam, and lost a lot of money as a result, thinking they are dealing with people known to them.

There have been – so far – two main methods used by the impersonator –

• He sends an email explaining how he is away from home in another country and has had his air ticket and money stolen. Or - there is some one very seriously ill in hospital. Please can you help and send money immediately by Western Union or Money Gram.

• Or he starts by asking for a favour – for you to cash cheques for him through your bank account. Actually, these are FAKE checks, but your bank will not notice immediately and so you pay them into your account and wait for them to clear. But now, the scammer emails you to ask for an advance of just part of that money due to some urgent need. He requests you to transfer money via Western Union or Money Gram.

The danger is that you might fall for either of these scams, because you trust the person whose account is being used and you don’t realise that it is a thief that is sending the email.

Our advice is….

When you get such emails, especially anything requesting you to send money urgently by Western Union or Money Gram, do not rush into this.

First - Forward the email to us. It helps us if we can know of such emails so that we can either confirm the credibility of the email, or if it is a scam, take steps to warn others. If it is a weekend, please also ring us to inform us that the email is coming.

Secondly; be very suspicious if asked to cash a check – most YWAMers here would either have their own account, or cash money through the YWAM account, they have no need to send cheques around the world.

Thirdly; do not transfer money by either Western Union, or Money Gram, unless you have fully confirmed the identity of the person sending and receiving the emails.

We do not want you to fall victim of this fraud. Please email us if you need further information or assistance.
